There are beautiful destinations, and then there is Alaska.
Fresh off my recent 7 night voyage aboard the magnificent Seven Seas Explorer, sailing from Vancouver to Whittier, I can confidently say that Alaska remains one of the most breathtaking destinations I have ever experienced.
This was my third Alaska cruise, and each visit leaves me even more inspired than the last. No matter how many photos you see or videos you watch, nothing prepares you for standing on your balcony watching glaciers drift by, spotting whales in the distance, or witnessing mountain ranges that seem to stretch endlessly into the horizon.
Alaska is not simply a cruise destination.
It is one of the last truly wild places on Earth.

The Magic of Alaska at Sea
Some of my favorite moments happened when we weren't in port at all.
Wrapped in a blanket on my balcony with a fresh coffee in hand, I spent hours simply watching Alaska unfold.
Snow-capped mountains emerged through the mist.
Waterfalls cascaded down sheer cliffs.
Eagles soared overhead.
Whales surfaced unexpectedly in the distance.
There is a tranquility to Alaska that is difficult to describe but impossible to forget.
These quiet moments often become the memories guests treasure most.
Ports That Leave a Lasting Impression
Ketchikan
Ketchikan is known as Alaska's First City and offers a wonderful introduction to the region. Famous for its colorful waterfront, Indigenous heritage, salmon fishing, and historic Creek Street, Ketchikan combines culture, history, and natural beauty in one charming destination.
Juneau
Juneau remains one of my favorite Alaskan ports. Accessible only by sea or air, it feels wonderfully remote. Whale watching, glacier adventures, helicopter excursions, and visits to the stunning Mendenhall Glacier make Juneau a true highlight of any Alaska itinerary.
Icy Strait Point
Icy Strait Point offers one of the most authentic Alaskan experiences available. Owned and operated by the local Indigenous community, it provides guests with a meaningful connection to local culture while delivering exceptional opportunities to spot whales, bears, sea lions, and bald eagles.
Skagway
Skagway transports visitors back to the days of the Klondike Gold Rush. The town's preserved buildings and fascinating history create an unforgettable atmosphere. The legendary White Pass & Yukon Route remains one of the most iconic excursions in Alaska and offers spectacular mountain scenery throughout the journey.
Hubbard Glacier
Hubbard Glacier was unquestionably one of the highlights of the voyage.
At more than six miles wide, Hubbard Glacier is difficult to comprehend until you see it in person. As Seven Seas Explorer carefully approached the glacier, guests gathered on balconies and open decks to witness its towering blue ice walls.
The thunderous sound of ice calving into the water serves as a powerful reminder that nature remains in charge here.
It is a moment that leaves even seasoned travelers speechless.
My Top Alaska Packing Tips
After three Alaska cruises, here are a few lessons I've learned.
Pack layers. Always.
Alaska weather can change quickly, even during the summer season.
My recommended packing list includes:
• Waterproof jacket
• Lightweight insulated jacket or fleece
• Comfortable walking shoes
• Gloves and a warm hat
• Sunglasses
• Binoculars (available in concierge and above suites)
• Camera or smartphone with plenty of storage
• Small daypack & dry bag for excursions
• Insulated and sweat proof Reusable water bottle (yeti or similar)
One of my favorite Alaska travel tips is to bring compact binoculars. They make a tremendous difference when viewing wildlife and glaciers from both your balcony and public viewing areas.
My Top Alaska Cruise Tips
Arrive at least one day before embarkation.
Never underestimate the importance of a pre-cruise hotel stay. Travel delays happen, and arriving early allows you to begin your vacation relaxed and stress-free.
Spend AS Much time as you can outdoors.
Many guests underestimate how much time they will want to spend on deck. Some of Alaska's most memorable moments happen unexpectedly.
Keep your camera close.
Wildlife sightings often happen with little warning. be on the lookout
Book excursions early.
Whale watching, helicopter adventures, and the White Pass Railway remain among the most sought-after experiences and will go fast.
Take time to simply be present.
Not every moment needs a photo. Some of the best memories come from putting down your phone and taking it all in.
